Apple’s Emergency Update: What You Need to Know
On August 17th, Apple released an emergency security update IOS 15.6.1 This was a direct response to two new and significant vulnerabilities that had been discovered in their operating system. The first of these flaws could have allowed an attacker to remotely take control of a victim’s iPhone or iPad simply by getting them to click on a malicious link–no jailbreaking required.
The second flaw could have given an attacker access to the content of encrypted backups made through iCloud, including photos, contacts, and other personal information.
These flaws were serious enough that an advisory was issued, urging users to perform the Apple software update as soon as possible. Fortunately, Apple was able to quickly release a patch for these vulnerabilities and no attacks using them have been reported.
What We Don’t Know
We don’t yet understand how the vulnerabilities were discovered. So far, thankfully, there have been no reported cases of them being exploited against users. Apple said it does not disclose, discuss or confirm any security issues until after an investigation has occurred and patches are available.
